Message from Sajjad Hemani – Candidate for the Presidency of Dubai Jamaat
Salaam Alaykum my Dear community members,
For those who know me know me, for those who don’t, let me give you a brief introduction of this humble slave of Allah SWT
My Name is Sajjad Hemani.
I have had the privilege to have been brought up in a family which has served the Community for over a century. I have served in various capacities. Jamaat in Arusha my birth place and Dar es Salaam. I have been executive Councilor of Dubai Jamaat for six years.
Having been born and brought up in Tanzania, I have developed an understanding for an intimate, tradional and progressive community. Schooling in different parts of East Africa having acquaintance with Arusha and Dar es Salaam Jamaats, as my parents resided there during my educational years, has given me invaluable exposure to the dynamics of different and yet similar Jamaats. My experience of the various Jamaats has inculcated in me the conviction of how we are one people. A very brief synopsis of my involvement in community service:
· Treasurer of the Arusha Jamaat at age of 20 years.
· Secretary – Arusha Jamaat for two terms.
· Member of education Board and Chariman of School Dar es Salaam Jamaat
· The Secretary of Dubai Jamaat
· World Federation Councilor for 3 terms.
My journey started six years ago when you elected me as your Executive Councilor for WF, blessing me with an opportunity to serve you, my community, for the pleasure of Allah (SWT).
As a Community we have made tangible progress but to optimize our true potential as a resourceful and vibrant Khoja Shia Ithna-asheri Community, we must not stop here, stagnation is unacceptable for a progressive community, and we must continue our development in all areas. It is this realization that inspires me to make a positive contribution and play my part in the realization of a more progressive and even more vibrant community. To do this, I humbly seek your blessings and support as I prepare to stand in service of the community as a presidential candidate for Dubai Jamaat for the term 2010-2012.
I would be obliged if you would consider my pledge to you, as my community, which is to prioritize the enormous importance for us as a community to grow, prosper and harmonize our religious and communal identity and to create an environment where we all, as members, feel empowered to shape the kind of jamaat we aspire for ourselves and for our children.
I have identified some of the priorities to sustain development and betterment of our community for which I will make every endeavor to accomplish:
Allow me at this point to share my vision with you
If elected I will Endeavour to search for alternatives to alleviate overcrowding at our Centre, seeking new properties for acquisition. The course of direction I intend to take here is to register as a total new entity with the authorities and apply for allocation or purchase land as either an NGO or Centre for multipurpose use.
I intend to prepare a database of all members, identify issues, and try uplifting members. My priority will be to try and bail out those members who have been seriously affected in this recession and if necessary to relocate them due to present economic uncertainty, create a business and professional networking body and job support.
There is undoubtedly a huge potential in our youths, this powerful energy can be utilized by bringing them together and groom them for leadership.
If elected I will encourage and facilitate more exciting programs, like debates, quiz programmes. I will involve them in decision making process ensuring they do not lose touch with their spiritual growth. Community programmes will be enhanced further, even if it means that the format for them is different but we must not allow the current status quo and lose them totally.
If I am successful in registering as a NGO and acquire land or premises I promise to will lay a foundation for sports facilities which will create a place for our youths to stay connected with the community without compromising on our spiritual growth inshaAllah
I will encourage our mothers, sisters and daughters to take positions in leadership. As someone so profoundly said “Give me good mothers and I will rock the world”
We have to study the need of seniors;
Form groups to visit them, network with them and also have more health care programs.
To preserve our Khoja cultural identity and traditional practices within a spiritual context, I would like to.
1. Strengthen and resource the recitors Committee, to promote the essence of azadari by facilitating inspirational speakers for adults and youths.
Hold periodic Azadari programs at Satwa under the auspices of the Jamaat,
2. We should have more refresher courses and sessions. Open days for learning our religion.
3. To search for inspirational speakers and book well in advance even if it’s to commit monetarily but to get the best.
The above will encourage attendance and participation.
For the purposes of administration, and dealing with the authorities I intend to appoint two members who are fluent in Arabic language and have good religious background on the committee to attend all meetings although they will not have voting powers but will represent us with Awqaaf ,government bodies and assist the MANCOM in public relations.
We need to set long term solution to welfare funding. To have a database to set up income support program.
My vision in this area is that cost of medical is accelerating, we need to look into ways of partnering with clinics or hospitals where we can benefit special rates as well look into ways of subsidizing medical treatment through the Jamaat for the members and also possible to try medical insurance scheme once again. I also intend to set up a medical subcommittee which will work on the above suggestions and also have contacts with overseas medical teams for members who requires further medical treatment.
I will endeavour with Singapore to form MEF and Ghusais can join in the Federation. There are many non African Khojas who are members at Satwa, they support us and work together and we will always give them equal respect.
To hold a monthly surgery for members to have confidential access to me.
To facilitate open forums, every six months, to discuss openly pertinent issues prevailing at the time – exchange of opinions between all stakeholders in the jamaat.
To reply to every communiqué received in the Jamaat Office within 5 working days.
I am cognizant of the fact that I may not achieve everything during my term but will definitely Endeavour to lay firm foundations and put the drive in place.
I intend to form a strategic planning committee which will obtain a survey of the community present their plan to general body and with approval of the body will implement on a 5 to 8 year term.
No one person or one team of a few selected individuals can resolve all our concerns and challenges and within one term of office. This change will only achieve in years to come but let us plant the seeds now. It takes us all to contribute to our jamaat in our own individual but meaningful way – for strength lies in unity and togetherness. I therefore intend to form as many sub committees as possible to have all my above dreams to put them into reality. I appeal to you for unity. Let us not fall into the traps of discord and disunity by elements of division within the community. I seek support of my candidacy and my vision for us all to be significant stakeholders in whatever capacity and in whatever manner.
May Allah (SWT) give me the tawfiq to be ever steadfast in the adherence of our Islamic principles and to be cognizant that “a man of words and not of deeds is like a garden full of weeds”.Finaly, allow me to make an observation. The success journey of this wonderful community was not achieved overnight. If you will look through the annals of history you will see the community has taken great strides to establish its status in the wider communities in UAE and beyond.
One cannot help but admire the visionary past leaders of the community, the likes of Haji Akbar Jessa and Haji Abdul Rasul Fazel who planted the seeds in late 70’s, holding majalises and religious activities from the terrace of Brother Mustafa Alidina, moving to Frij Murar, Hor Al Anz, then on to Fardan Imambargah in Jafiliya and finally onto Satwa.
This was indeed a huge milestone achieved, but our unflinching quest for further progress attracted robust leaders, who carried the flag and upheld the core ethos of the community.
Haji Abdul Rasul Fazel, Marhum Jaffer Shivji, Marhum Mohamed Pirmohamed, Azizbhai Jawad, Mustafabhai Dhanji, Akbarbhai Somji, Marhum Hussanali Yusufali, Abdulhamid Karim, Anwarbhai Haji and not forgetting Shabbirbhai Damji have all made positive contributions in leading the community to its present enviable status. The community is greatly indebted to them for their sincere contribution.
Brothers and Sisters, I AM TRULY INSPIRED by these sincere elders and past leaders, I have time to dedicate, and I have learnt a great deal from them, I now feel very confident that I am ready to play my part in taking the community to the next level.
And so First and foremost I most humbly seek the Tawfeeq to serve, from Allah SWT and the Holy Ahlulbayt (Alaihimus Salaam) I seek the blessings and support of all the past leaders and elders of this great community, to place their hands on my head to guide me to achieve OUR vision.
And most importantly Brothers and Sisters I seek, YOUR prayers and blessings to help me take US to the next level.
For me Brothers and Sisters. IT IS YOU, THE COMMUNITY, THAT MATTERS, AND IT IS ONLY UPTO YOU TO DECIDE WHAT MATTERS TO YOU.
I SEEK YOUR SUPPORT AND DUAS.
